HBO’s The Last of Us could shock the world if they sweep the 2023 Emmys and it’s certainly a possibility.
The Emmy Awards mean something different to the cast and crew of a project and the fans. However, they strangely connect. They’re both happy about the acknowledgment. Actors love getting acknowledged for the work they’ve done (as they should). After months of filming, editing, and missing their families, they’re shown love and admiration for their job. Fans like it because something they enjoyed is getting recognized. It shows that the people in charge of awards loved something as much as they did. In this case, we have HBO’s The Last of Us.
According to emmys.com, the popular HBO program received over twenty Emmy nominations. Pedro Pascal was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series. Bella Ramsey for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series. Lamar Johnson, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, and Keivonn Montreal Woodard are nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series category. Anna Torv, Storm Reid, and Melanie Lynskey Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series.
It wasn’t just the performers who were recognized for their greatness. The Last of Us also received multiple nominations for Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More), Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series, Outstanding Contemporary Costumes For A Series, and more. This shows that it was more than just the performers. Everyone helped make this an iconic show.
The Last of Us Emmy history
Considering how amazing this show was, no one should be surprised. It took the source material from an award-winning video game and turned it into a (soon-to-be) award-winning show. Except there is an unprecedented aspect to this. The Last of Us is based on a video game. Projects like this don’t get identified for excellence. Netflix’s Arcane won the Emmy for best-animated program in 2022, but it didn’t get nearly the amount of nominations as The Last of Us did.
Hopefully, the number of awards, streams, and popularity will show that the source material shouldn’t matter. When The Last of Us cleans up at the Emmys and then the Academy Awards, one thing will certainly be proven. The quality of a project is the only thing that should matter.
