5. Leather

The X-Men had an extended period where all of their teammates wore black leather uniforms. It was a bad time for X-Men fans. In Astonishing X-Men No. 1 Cyclops said, “Superheroes wear costumes. And quite frankly, all the black leather is making people nervous.” Scott Summers was 100% right.

The leather was bad in the movies and shouldn’t have influenced the comics. They’re unlike the X-Men in Marvel Comics. The black leather made them look more like a gang instead of superheroes. Blade or the Punisher in leather makes sense. Leather doesn’t work for the Fantastic Four or certain members of The Avengers.

With all that being said, it did work for Wolverine. He’s known for being scary and terrifying people. However, not even Hugh Jackman could make them appealing in the movies.

Grade: B (but for Logan only)

Grade: F in the movies

4. All black

Wolverine’s first ongoing series ran from 1988-2003 and featured a short-lived costume from Logan. It was all black, with a red belt, and short black gloves. It’s one of the most basic designs this writer has ever seen. Nevertheless, like this writer said early, sometimes basic works for Logan. This is one of those times.

The only off-putting part is the black face paint across his eyes. It’s unclear if this was supposed to make him look fiercer, but it didn’t. Although don’t be shocked if Wolverine went back to this uniform in the future. It’s not a bad appearance for him and a new artist could make the face paint work.

Grade: B+

3. Fang

During the Phoenix Saga, Wolverine defeated a member of the Shi’ar Imperial Guards named Fang. After beating him, Logan stole his uniform. This wasn’t pettiness. Wolverine’s costume was destroyed after getting hit by a fire attack.

The brown, orange, and yellow color scheme works for Logan. The ring of teeth around the neck and gloves added a feral feeling to the look. This wasn’t used by Logan for long, but his son (Akihiro) is currently using it (read Marauders by Steve Orlando for that story). He’s also adopted the name Fang and dropped Daken altogether. The Fang uniform works better for Akihiro. He was long overdue for something new.

Grade: C for Logan

Grade: A for Akihiro
