“Trick or Treat, Freak” (Season 2, Episode 2)

With the exception of “The Lost Sister,” I don’t think any episode of Stranger Things is straight-up bad. But there are a few that feel more like filler than others, and that includes the season 2 episode “Trick or Treat, Freak.” After the season 2 premiere, the storyline is a little slow to build up the main conflicts, and the stakes feel relatively low in the second episode. This one blends sci-fi elements with the lighthearted nature of the kids, taking place during Halloween. And while I generally do love Halloween episodes, this one is forgettable.

“Trick or Treat, Freak” sees the characters still dealing with the aftermath of the events in season 1, and the boys start hanging out with Max. Eleven is still in hiding but is desperately wanting to connect with Mike somehow, while Will still feels threatened by the Upside Down. Although the episode hints at impending danger, we don’t get anything too exciting yet.

“The Vanishing of Will Byers” (Season 1, Episode 1)

I’d be remiss if I didn’t add the first-ever episode of Stranger Things to this list, which, of course, is amazing. The series premiere introduces us to Hawkins, its residents, and the mysterious events that start to unfold. As the title suggests, the episode revolves around the disappearance of Will Byers and the aftermath.

I still remember the first time I watched the premiere. It does such a fantastic job of establishing the tone and setting, incorporating a nostalgic ’80s atmosphere with pop culture references and well-constructed homages to popular movies of the time. Like the show as a whole, the very first episode strikes a perfect balance between various genres, combining thrilling suspense and heartfelt storytelling.

“The Vanishing of Will Byers” sets up the overarching mysteries and character arcs of Stranger Things, and it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
