Ms. Marvel may have died in Amazing Spider-Man no. 26, but she’ll return in a mini-series and come back to Marvel Comics as a mutant.

During Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man No. 26, Marvel Comics fans witnessed the death of Kamala Khan. Shocking to no one, she died protecting someone. Her death became the biggest controversy in comics before the issue debuted. Fans of Kamala hated that she was dying. Especially not in her own title.

As if seeing Kamla die wasn’t bad enough, Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel came out and hit this writer in the heart. People in Kamala’s civilian and superhero life showed up to mourn their loved one. There were special moments throughout like Carol Danvers crying with Kamala’s friends and Logan paying his respect to Kamala’s father. They both added to the sad realization that the noblest hero in comics was actually dead. That being said, everyone knew that she wasn’t going to stay dead long. However, the announcement came sooner than expected.

It was reported that Kamala Khan will return with a new creative team. Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Sabir Pirzada (Dark Web: Ms. Marvel) are going to co-write the four-part mini-series with Carlos Gómez (X-Terminators) and Carlos Gómez (Darth Vader). That’s not the best news. When Kamala Khan comes back in Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, she’ll no longer be an Inhuman. She’ll return as a mutant.

If Kamla returns via the Resurrection Protocols, how that makes her a mutant remains to be seen. Wanda Maximoff and regular humans have come back from the dead this way. They didn’t return as mutants. Knowing Cyclops, he’ll probably ask The Five to give her the mutant gene. This way she can come and go through the Krakoan gates (that’s if Krakoa survives X-Men: Fall of X.)

Considering Kamala is a mutant in the MCU and The Marvels comes out later this year, there’s another option. Kamala may have always had the mutant gene in her. Her Djinn biology could have hidden her mutant gene and masked it as Inhuman. That would explain why the Terrigen Mist didn’t kill her. Instead, it activated her powers.

The return of Ms. Marvel

The biggest issue that people had with Kamala’s death was her dying for nothing. Sure, she saved Mary Jane’s life, but was that enough? If you aren’t following Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man, then you didn’t know it was more than one life she saved. Kamala saving MJ prevented a world-ending event. Either way, she died a hero and that’s what should matter.

More than anything, this was an excuse to make Kamala Khan a mutant. Originally, Ms. Marvel’s creators wanted her to be a mutant. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Kamla debuted when Marvel was attempting to replace mutants with Inhumans. That meant a new character became an Inhuman via the Terrigen Mist. Now, Kamala Khan has an opportunity to be what G. Willow Wilson wanted her character to be. Hopefully, it will be everything she hoped for.
