The first look at the new Red Sonja movie could be coming at San Diego Comic-Con.
Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a sword, is getting a live-action feature reboot movie from director M.J. Bassett, and San Diego Comic-Con will see a teaser trailer released for the character’s 50th anniversary.
Red Sonja was a creation of comics writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics from 1973 up to 1995. The character was based on Red Sonya of Rogatino by author Robert E. Howard. Red Sonja is an incredibly high-skilled swordswoman and has even been featured along side Conan the Barbarian in various forms of media and crossovers within Marvel and Dynamite comics. Red Sonja has teamed up with Spider-Man and has even used Mary Jane Watson as a vessel transforming Mary Jane into the warrior after she gets in contact with the mystical sword.
She headlined her own feature film in 1985’s Red Sonja starring Brigitte Nielsen in the titular role (alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger) and although it wasn’t a critical success, Hollywood is giving the She-Devil another chance.
Red Sonja returns to the big screen in movie reboot
This reboot has been in development hell for a long time having bounced from different production companies, directors, and actors tied to the titular role. After years of uncertainty the reboot found it’s footing and home with Millenium Films and director M.J. Bassett (who you may know from directing films such as Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Revelation, Deathwatch and Wilderness), will be directing the new Red Sonja film.
It’s safe to say that the film is in good hands with Bassett having shown influences of Ridley Scott, Sam Raimi, and Wes Craven showing a grand interest in genre filmmaking. The film will reportedly be rated R and it features quite the cast, including Matilda Lutz (Revenge, A Classic Horror Story) as Red Sonja, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Wallis Day (Krypton, Batwoman) as Annisia, Michael Bisping as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu as Amarak, Veronica Ferres as Ashera and Rhona Mitra (Doomsday, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans).
