Nicolas Cage is an icon among us, known best for his distinctive acting style and his long list of movies, both bad and good. The nephew of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, Cage began his acting career back in the early 1980s, with his first movie role being a minor part in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Throughout the years since, he’s starred in some cult classics, box office hits, and indie favorites. He’s also appeared in complete duds, which at this point only adds to his charm.

People find it fascinating that an Academy Award winner has starred in more than a few really bad movies, but there’s an explanation for that. Cage’s personal life has taken many ups and downs, and at one point he found himself millions of dollars in debt. The actor, now 59 years old, has admitted he’s taken on “crummy” roles just to pay the bills. That certainly puts some of his questionable career choices into perspective.

Though Cage has had steady work since starting his career, he’s really seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, and we absolutely love that. So without further ado, let’s rank the actor’s best movies, from the ridiculous (but still fun) to the really great.

13. Vampire’s Kiss

Vampire’s Kiss is essential viewing if you’re a fan of Nicolas Cage. The dark comedy/horror movie came out in 1988 and follows an agent living in New York named Peter Loew. After a strange encounter with a woman out on the town one night, Peter believes he’s turning into a vampire. Because of this, he starts acting out against those around him and becomes increasingly paranoid and erratic. Is Peter actually turning into a supernatural creature, or is it all in his head? That’s the question in Vampire’s Kiss.

The movie was a box office bomb when it first premiered, but in the years since it’s become a total cult classic. The movie is so darn funny, whether it means to be or not, and Cage’s performance is so outrageous it’s impossible not to laugh. I love this movie and I’m glad others do, too!

VERDICT: Ridiculous
