6. Adaptation

Written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze, the 2002 movie Adaptation is based on the writer’s own experience trying to adapt the book The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean. It follows a fictionalized version of Charlie Kaufman, a screenwriter tasked with adapting the book. As he struggles with writer’s block, he becomes consumed by self-doubt and insecurities. It includes fictional elements to the real-life story like Charlie’s twin brother Donald, also played by Nicolas Cage.

Cage gives a fantastic performance as Charlie/Donald and the movie tells a totally unique story with an unconventional narrative structure blurring the lines between reality and fiction. It’s a daring film that makes for a thought-provoking experience, one you won’t easily forget.

VERDICT: Really Great

5. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Nicolas Cage doesn’t have a starring role in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but his presence in the animated film is definitely memorable. The Academy Award-winning movie is an absolute must-watch for movie fans, whether you’re into Marvel or not.

With its visually stunning animation styles, innovative storytelling, and racial inclusivity, Into the Spider-Verse is without a doubt one of the best superhero movies ever. And if Cage’s Spider-Man Noir was in the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it would be included on this list, too.

Cage portrays Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse, an alternate, monochromatic version of Spider-Man who is pulled out of his dimension. Cage’s distinctive voice is a welcome addition to the multi-verse.

VERDICT: Really Great
