While many shows have been forced to halt production due to the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes, House of the Dragon season 2 remains on track to still release in 2024.
Despite the current challenges that Hollywood is facing with the ongoing WGA strike, which is now joined by the SAG strike, one of the most anticipated series in the TV landscape remains unaffected. HBO’s hit series and Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, is all set to roar back to life for its second season.
Fans, curious about the strike’s potential impact on their favorite dragon-ridden series, can breathe a sigh of relief. The scripts for the upcoming season were finalized well ahead of the strike, keeping the show’s production on track. House of the Dragon season 2, according to Variety, is still expected to be unleashed upon eager fans in the summer of 2024.
Providing an insider’s view, franchise creator George R.R. Martin shared the following about season 2:
"“The second season of House of the Dragon started filming April 11 and will continue in London and Wales. The scripts for the eight S2 episodes were all finished months ago, long before the strike began. Every episode has gone through four or five drafts and numerous rounds of revisions, to address HBO notes, my notes, budget concerns, etc. There will be no further revisions.”"
Martin’s comments make it clear that, as far as the writers are concerned, their task is done. The unfolding of the tale now rests with the directors, cast, crew, and, of course, the dragons.
Sharing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, showrunner Ryan Condal revealed in a recent interview:
"“Now we get to fall into the more traditional rhythms of storytelling and Game of Thrones. This series is very much about a house tearing itself apart from within. I’m really excited to tell the next chapter, to see what happens now that Viserys is gone and no longer keeping a lid on things.”"
House of the Dragon offers a fascinating exploration of the Targaryen dynasty at its zenith, commanding over 15 dragons. This empire, as most do, experiences a slow descent from such dizzying heights. The genesis of the Targaryen downfall commences almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, as King Viserys Targaryen’s decision to name his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir sends shockwaves through the realm. Even after fathering a son, Viserys’ choice to keep Rhaenyra as his successor sews seeds of division that threaten to tear apart the kingdom.
With the board set for an intriguing tale of power, loyalty, and dragon fire, Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” is set to stoke the flames of anticipation further.
