6. Season 7

Buffy‘s seventh and final season had a pretty solid storyline to work with, bringing back the concept of the First Evil and setting it up against the biggest team of vampire slayers we’ve ever had. Unfortunately, the execution of it left a lot to be desired.

That idea of multiple new Slayers, a.k.a. the Potentials, ultimately worked against it, as it meant that the show had to introduce a slew of new characters in the space of one season, which ended up leaving audiences feeling detached. It’s like being served a new dish at your favorite restaurant that, while brimming with new exciting ingredients, strays too far from the recipes you know and love. Season 7 walked this precarious line, pushing the boundaries of its established universe through these newly introduced characters, and unfortunately, overstepping them.

Then there’s the aforementioned First Evil. They were intriguing in theory, sure, but it quickly became tedious as the series grappled to transform this abstract idea into a tangible foe. As a result, we got the Turok-Han, a.k.a. Ubervamps, which had to be brought in as their unstoppable army just to give our Slayers something to fight.

The finale, though not entirely satisfying, was much stronger than most of the season.

We just wish the show went out on a higher note.
