1. Get Out

There’s no way Get Out wouldn’t land as the number one spot in my Jordan Peele movie ranking. His directorial debut in 2017 made a huge impact on the genre, blending horror with the exploration of racism and the modern Black experience in America. The movie follows a couple, an African American man named Chris and a white woman named Rose, who visit Rose’s family estate for the weekend. It doesn’t take long for Chris to start uncovering secrets about his girlfriend’s family and their horrifying intentions.

The opening scene of Get Out is a fantastic way to set up the suspenseful and frightening tone that’s carried out throughout the rest of the movie. Though there’s definitely comedy sprinkled into the film, at its core it’s a disturbing piece of social commentary.

Daniel Kaluuya is absolutely fantastic in the movie, and his performance earned him his first-ever Academy Award nomination. The film was nominated for four total awards at the 2018 ceremony, with Peele taking home the award for Best Original Screenplay. His win marked the first time an African American writer ever won the award.

Get Out is widely regarded as one of the best movies of the 2010s, and his directorial debut put Peele on the map as a truly influential filmmaker.
