Disney Plus hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about ordering additional seasons of its Marvel shows, but it’s nearing completion of the second season of X-Men ’97.
San Diego Comic-Con 2023 was… pretty quiet this year, but the cherry on top was the exclusive reveal of Marvel’s X-Men ’97 clip during the “Designing the X-Men” panel.
X-Men ’97 is a revival of the absolutely legendary 1992 animated series X-Men: The Animated Series. In the series, Storm and Wolverine are trying to keep the X-Men legacy alive while Magneto decides to fill Charles Xavier’s shoes, and Sinister is out on a mission to end the X-Men once and for all.
The animation style mirrors the original series, an element that had those of us who grew up with the original cartoon grinning from ear to ear, and maybe with a tear or two rolling down our cheeks.
The last 10 minutes of the panel were an extra treat, with the team surprising attendees by gracing the event. The jam-packed Room 7AB erupted with gasps and cheering as fans witnessed the reveal of Master Mold, a pregnant Jean Grey (I have so many thoughts on this), and Archangel and Bishop as new team members. Cyclops even delivered his iconic line – “To me, my X-Men.”
An even better update, however, is that season two is in the works.
It’s almost like the comic gods heard our nerdy and needy pleas and decided to gift us with a much-needed continuation of an iconic and highly entertaining series. With its second season already being written, we can only wait to see what kind of craziness will be unleashed.
The sequel series is the brainchild of Beau DeMayo, with Jake Castorena and Chase Conley sharing the director’s chair. Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Adrian Hough, and Christopher Britton reprise their roles from the original series (Wolverine, Rogue, Beast, Jean Grey, Gambit, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Sinister), with Jennifer Hale, Matthew Waterson, Ray Chase, AJ LoCascio, Gui Agustini, and Holly Chou joining the team and voicing some significant characters.
