Andrew Garfield is interested in an Amazing Spider-Man 3 movie but he has one MAJOR condition
Andrew Garfield is open to reprising his role as the friendly-neighborhood Spider-Man but his return could be tied to one major condition.
Out of all the live-action Spider-Men we’ve seen on the big screen, Andrew Garfield’s had the unfortunate fate of being the shortest-lived. The Amazing Spider-Man movies were met with mixed reviews and didn’t generate enough revenue to secure the development of more sequels and spin-offs. Not even Andrew’s passion for the role allowed him to wear the mask in a third stand-alone movie, which is a shame considering his character’s story was far from being finished.
While some fans hoped to see him swing through the skies of New York as the web-slinger one more time, that hope seemed to vanish when the British actor revealed how he felt about the character. The relationship between Andrew Garfield and Spider-Man became complicated after he was let go of the role, and it seemed he would never portray Peter Parker again… until Spider-Man: No Way Home happened.
The multiversal adventure not only featured the return of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man but Tobey Maguire’s as well. And now that enough time has passed since the movie’s release (and since it shattered many records) it appears Andrew is ready to wear the suit again. However, his return seemed to be tied to a major condition.
As reported by Grace Randolph, Kevin Feige would need to be involved in the creation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in order for Andrew to be tied to the project:
Why Andrew Garfield will only do Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Kevin Feige
Kevin Feige has been the man responsible for watching over the development and growth of the MCU for many years now. It’s safe to say he has a lot of experience, which makes him better understand what works and what doesn’t in superhero films. As proof of that, he gave notes to Sony on things that could’ve been improved for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and, yes, he was right about them. Some of the notes include the following points:
- “There are too many storylines”.
- “Tone down Paul Giamatti’s performance, so he seems a bit more menacing and less cartoonish.”
- “There is too much back and forth with Peter and Gwen”
- “All this special back story with his super-scientist dad fights with the idea that Peter is a normal kid from Queens who becomes the greatest super-hero in the world”
If The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had fixed some of the issues Keving Feige mentioned, then maybe Andrew would still be Sony’s and Marvel’s only Spider-Man to date. So it’s easy to see why the British actor wants Feige to be involved in a potential third movie.
The untold story of The Amazing Spider-Man 3
Before Sony struck a deal with Marvel and rebooted the character within the MCU, there were ideas for what The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could’ve been about. Denis Leary, who portrayed the role of Captain Stacy in Marc Webb’s saga, revealed in an interview with IGN that the movie could’ve seen Peter Parker use a formula to bring to life people in his life that had died.
Yes, you read that right.
It seems Sony was taking inspiration from the Clone Saga comic book storyline in order to shape the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. However, when you take into account that the Clone Saga was immensely controversial, it doesn’t sound like it would make for a great big-screen experience. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why Andrew hasn’t fully agreed on making a third installment as the wall-crawler yet, and why he would like Kevin Feige to be involved if it ever comes to be.
Only time will tell if Andrew Garfield will come back as our friendly-neighborhood hero. However, being open to playing the character again is definitely the first step, and it seems that step was already given.
