12. Sam Arias / Reign

Reign is easily Supergirl‘s best villain. That’s not hyperbole nor a figure of speech. It’s a fact. A cold, hard fact.

Not only is the character bloody terrifying, she’s a rare example of a villain that we actually cared for. Because her very existence threatened the life that Sam Arias had built, as well as the life of her daughter Ruby.

Odette Annable had a tall task when she debuted in Supergirl season 3. She had to play not one but two characters full time, introducing us to the loving mother Sam, as well as the Kryptonian demon that lived within her. Yet, she delivered two absolutely phenomenal performances, making our hearts burst with love every time that Sam was on-screen, and cower behind our sofas when the apocalyptic Reign showed up.

Sam’s life in National City, her friendships with Kara and Lena, and her bond with daughter Ruby made us all want to fight for her. It also created excellent conflict as it made us all scared that she wouldn’t survive if Supergirl really had to put Reign down.

While the arc itself was probably about five episodes too long, the show did a great job of juggling its primary villain with her human alter-ego, solidifying both Sam and Reign as important parts of Supergirl‘s incredible legacy. While we’re sad that they both only stuck around for one season, Odette Annable’s incredible performance left us all wanting more. And that’s a good way to leave any show.
