4. Lena Luthor

To say that Lena Luthor was the most complex character on Supergirl would be a major understatement. She first arrived in National City at the beginning of season 2, but her reputation preceded her because of the actions of her nefarious brother Lex. She had a tough time from those who thought her guilty-by-association, but Lena saw this as an opportunity to carve out her own path, one full of love and hope. And that was just the beginning of her journey.

Throughout her time on Supergirl, Lena was at the forefront of the show a lot. She had the bonus of not being a member of the Super Friends for a long time, so she often got her own separate storylines (normally involving another Luthor) and that allowed the writers to showcase her potential as something of a main character in her own right. For the most part, it worked well as Lena was undoubtedly one of the most compelling characters on the show.

She walked the line between light and dark, pondering whether the end would justify the means multiple times during her quest for peace. The creative team did let her down in season 5 when they had her fall into some villainous traps upon feeling betrayed by her friends, but they ultimately managed to turn things around before it got too late.

We hated seeing Lena go down such a dark path because she was such a light on the show. From her lovable personality and her incredible bond with Kara, to Katie McGrath’s flawless performance, this portrayal of the character far outshined her comic book counterpart and we’ll be forever thankful to Supergirl and McGrath for bringing her to life.
