1. Kara Danvers / Supergirl

You knew there was never any doubt, right? No character ranking of Supergirl would be complete without the Girl of Steel herself in the top spot. She’s just that strong of a character.

While the lead of the show having the best material isn’t exactly surprising, Supergirl didn’t rest on its laurels. It portrayed Kara Danvers as a hero long before she started using her super-powers, carefully showcasing how big her heart was while also exploring her thoughts and feelings over how she could do more with her gifts. And do more is exactly what did – and then some.

Kara’s journey can’t be described in just a few paragraphs. There’s too much to encapsulate. But what we can say is that the thoughtful portrayal of Supergirl’s story of heroism didn’t just make her the best character on the show, it made her one of the best characters in TV history. She struggled with being Kara Danvers half of the time, and struggled with being Supergirl the other, all because she just wanted to be herself and help people in so many different ways.

Supergirl is a light in the world who just wants to make it a better place. Her relationships with characters like her sister Alex, best friend Lena, and mentor Cat Grant all solidify her goal of doing that, making her a stronger hero in the process. And Melissa Benoist understood the assignment so well, gifting us with one of the greatest (and most endearing) live-action portrayals of a superhero in history.
