The next entry in the small-screen side of the MCU is Loki Season 2. The Disney+ series will see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Mobius (Owen Wilson) searching for Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and Judge Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), both off whom went off on their own paths at the end of Loki Season 1.

The trailer for Season 2 was recently released, and it’s been revealed it broke a viewership record.

Loki’s new trailer becomes the most-watched debut trailer for Disney+ shows

According to Deadline, the latest look at the show, which released July 31st, garnered 80 million views online, making it the biggest trailer debut for a Disney+ show.

That’s an impressive accomplishment, considering the many high-profile series that have been released on the streaming service since its inception, such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, WandaVision and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

On one hand, the trailer’s popularity could be considered surprising given the gap between it and its predecessor. Loki‘s first season premiered over two years ago, and such a wait between installments risked leading to audience disinterest for another Loki story. That, however, didn’t happen—at least when it comes to its marketing.

Looking at things from another perspective, however, the trailer’s numbers may not necessarily be that unexpected. In March 2022, The Hollywood Reporter released numbers for the highest-viewed Marvel and Star Wars Disney+ series. Loki was the most-watched MCU show on the list, with 5.2 billion minutes watched overall, compared to WandaVision‘s 4.8 billion, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s 4.1 billion and Hawkeye‘s 3.4 billion.

THR also revealed that, at roughly 872 million minutes per episode, the series enjoyed the highest average viewing time out of all the Disney+ Marvel and Star Wars shows at the time.

Does this mean Loki season 2 will be a hit?

The question is: Does the trailer’s viewership signal a sizable audience for the God of Mischief’s newest streaming installment? It’s difficult to tell, as trailer views aren’t necessarily correlated with a show’s viewership.

To exemplify that, below are the viewership numbers for first trailers for five MCU Disney+ series compared to the shows’ 5-and-4-day premiere viewership in the US, according to Samba TV, a company that tracks audience analytics:

WandaVision:

  • Trailer viewership in first 24 hours: 53 million online (via Deadline).
  • Five-day premiere viewership: 1.6 million.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier:

  • Trailer viewership in first 24 hours: 125 million (via Deadline).
  • Five-day premiere viewership: 1.8 million.

Note: As specified by Deadline, the number comes from the traffic generated by the trailer from both the Super Bowl spot as well as the trailer itself, which presumably refers to its online viewership.

Loki:

  • Trailer viewership in first 24 hours: 60 million (The Hollywood Reporter, via Comicbook.com).
  • Five-day premiere viewership: 2.5 million.

Moon Knight:

  • Trailer viewership in first 24 hours: 75 million (The Hollywood Reporter, via Comicbook.com).
  • Five-day premiere viewership: 1.8 million.

Note: The trailer viewership is split between 52 million online and 23 million from its broadcast on ESPN.

She-Hulk:

  • Trailer viewership in first 24 hours: 78 million (via The Hollywood Reporter).
  • Four-day premiere viewership: 1.5 million (via Samba TV).

Looking at those numbers, the success of the second-season trailer for Loki does not necessarily mean it will equate to a large viewership for the show itself, both in terms of the MCU shows’ five-day premieres and long-term performance.

Having said that, the first season of the series was, as shown above, successful, which may indicate a healthy debut and longevity for Loki‘s second solo adventure on Disney+.
