There are some things we need to see from Wonder Woman in the new DCU.

Wonder Woman could be returning to the big screen in the form of a trilogy, at least according to Gal Gadot. The action star all but confirmed she’s working with DCU producers Peter Safan and James Gunn on Wonder Woman 3. Shortly after Gadot dropped the tease, news outlets started reporting she embellished the truth.

Surely James Gunn and Pete Safran will either confirm or debunk these conflicting reports sooner or later. For now, let’s pretend Wonder Woman is returning for a third time. The news is bittersweet given what we last saw in Wonder Woman 1984. Gadot was amazing at always, but the film suffered from muddled subplots. A few amazing things were going on.

At the top was Max Lord’s gradual descent into egotistical manic as he looked to exploit people’s desires for greed. Cheetah got some love as WW84 explored the dynamic between her and Diana Prince. And there was Wonder Woman’s personal journey with Steve Trevor’s return.

Separately they all work, and if done correctly, two of three would have worked wonderfully. Unfortunately, things just didn’t connect. Cheetah is a story all its own, tie her into Diana’s personal journey, throw a returning Steve in there, and you have the perfect blend. Max Lord as a villain isn’t bad, especially when you throw in Cheetah. Patty Jenkins could have used the duo and intertwined them with Diana’s view of humanity as a catalyst for a film.

What exactly will we get going forward with Wonder Woman going forward — no one knows. One thing we do know is that Patty Jenkins got the boot from the new DCU. Gadot hasn’t confirmed what her role will be in Safran and Gunn’s DCU, we can only speculate. Gadot as Wonder Woman has been one of the best castings in comic book movie history in terms of actress and success.

Wonder Woman was a global phenomenon that put a much-deserved spotlight on a DC hero that deserved it. Naturally, when Gadot hinted at her role going forward, excitement was palpable among DC fans and comic book movie fans alike. If Gadot is returning, there are a few things fans want to see.
