Season 3: The Swordsmith Village Arc
Demon Slayer season 3, a.k.a The Swordsmith Village Arc, follows Tanjiro as he sets out to a hidden place to get his new sword. There, he encounters two Upper Rank demons who seek to destroy the village and cut off the Demon Slayer Corps’ armory. Fortunately, Tanjiro doesn’t have to take on such a difficult battle by himself, as he is joined by two Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji and Muichiro Tokito.
Starting with the pros, this season showed us how strong Tanjiro has gotten since we were first introduced to him. He can think on his feet, fight with far more speed, and, when out comes down to it, make the hard, selfless decisions. What’s more, he’s become a great asset to have on a team, no matter who he’s matched with. All around, the road ahead for him looks promising!
But doesn’t it always? Doesn’t Tanjiro always find a way to break through?
Although we would love nothing more than for Tanjiro to stay alive through it all, this third season reminded us of the unbelievable amount of plot armor our main character has. So much so that it felt like we already knew what was going to happen even though every episode was brand new.
Tanjiro sets off on a new mission, he encounters a new enemy, realizes they’re strong, has a moment of doubt, and then when all is lost, he suddenly rises above despite being on the verge of death moments ago. Finally, Tanjiro secures a win, despite the enemies being so unbelievably powerful that the strongest of demon slayers struggle. After three seasons, the story gets a little stale.
The overpowered Hashira that are the Love and Mist Hashira to assist Tanjiro doesn’t help season 3’s case, as we feel like there wasn’t much—dare we say—conflict or character development for Tanjiro since he barely had to do much against his foes. It’s almost like the main focal point should’ve just switched to Muichiro or another side character, as it would’ve made a far more intriguing story.
Though season 3 has its perks, ultimately, it just falls flat.
Rating: C-
What Could’ve Made Season 3 Better: Besides more conflict and some character development, we think the third season would’ve benefited from a tad more believability, even though the show is, by and large, fictitious. Also, maybe ending the season on a cliffhanger where we see a glimpse of a defeated Tanjiro before the end credits roll would’ve felt pretty neat. It also would’ve set season 4 up for a great start!
