Blue Beetle is the latest DC film out on August 18, 2023. Fans and critics have shared their reactions to early screenings of the film.
Blue Beetle is the latest DC film entry. Directed by Puerto Rican film director Ángel Manuel Soto and starring Xolo Maridueña in the titular role. The film is set for wide release on August 18, 2023, but had it’s run with early screenings and the feedback has been super positive.
This will be the first time a Latino superhero takes center stage for a live-action film by DC. With heavy influences of Hispanic culture and family thanks to the vision from director Ángel Manuel Soto, a Puerto Rican, and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer a Mexican-born writer. Together they set the tone for the film and give the DC Universe a different narrative for the superhero genre.
Warner Bros. initially slated Blue Beetle to be released on its streaming platform MAX but ultimately switched gears and opted for a theatrical release instead. By the looks of the early reactions from fans and movie critics, it seems that this was a very smart move to make.
Having only directed a small number of feature films, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto is sure to be on everyone’s radar after this film’s release as is leading man Xolo Maridueña who fans may remember from Netflix’s original series Cobra Kai.

Happy to report that @angelmanuelsoto’s #BlueBeetle is definitely a great time at the movies! Not only is it a fantastic introduction to Jaime Reyes as a character/hero, but also a love letter to the Latino culture, that focuses on family as its foundation. @bluebeetle 1/3 pic.twitter.com/ieVw0DSR2Z

#BlueBeetle is fantastic fun. Funny, surprisingly heartfelt with a star making turn by Xolo Maridueña. The kid has IT. Director Angel Manuel Soto makes Latinos' supposed "invisibility" into a full-on superpower. Truly inspiring. I also want the Abuela origin story now! pic.twitter.com/zj3uSThJbl

Some is too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!). Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome.
Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun. pic.twitter.com/5qzWIkmDyE
Happy to report @angelmanuelsoto's #BlueBeetle was so much better than I expected. He's added his own flavor to the superhero genre by having the film focus on a tight-knit family and Latino culture. It’s fun, extremely funny, and he got away with a few jokes that floored me. pic.twitter.com/TA6I5a9sGl

Blue Beetle is one of the best movies of DC’s modern era. Right up there with the first Wonder Woman movie. Fun. Emotional. Culturally significant. Extremely funny. I was blown away. Jaime Reyes absolutely deserves to be a part of the new DCU. pic.twitter.com/QdWopO5Vtv

#BlueBeetle is a MASSIVE win for DC & an electric introduction to the first hero of the DCU. Xolo Maridueña's charismatic star making performance confidently anchors this intimate synthwave journey of family, heritage, & purpose. A fresh and endearing spin on the origin story! pic.twitter.com/BlpXS2iKFl
