16. Nightcrawler

Why did they do Nightcrawler like that? The lovable teleporting mutant found himself caught in Fox’s web of missed opportunities. In the comics, Nightcrawler is known for his unique appearance and charming personality. It was something we’ve seen in animation, and to their credit in Apocalypse.

Born to Mystique, a fact that was barely touched upon, his intricate family dynamic was cast aside for the big screen. Technically Days of Future Past hinted at Mystique having a baby. In Apocalypse, there was a little something about their relationship, but the depth of their mother-son connection leaves a lot to be desired.

Even in the animated adaptations, we got to see some moments like in X-Men: Evolution when Mystique reveals herself to be Kurt’s mother. X-Men: The Animated Series took a more hardcore approach, but they made the connection nonetheless while also showing Mystique did not deserve him as a son.

Back to the movies. Remember that electrifying scene in the first X-Men film? Nightcrawler’s debut showcased his teleportation prowess, yet it was just a tantalizing glimpse. Instead of delving into his rich background, Fox shifted focus to other characters, leaving Nightcrawler’s tapestry of complexity largely untouched.

With the X-Men joining the MCU, one can only help Nightcrawler’s backstory get the love it deserves.
