3. Adam West and Cesaro Romero

While their takes on Batman and the Joker might look different from those that followed — largely in tone — there is no denying that Adam West and Cesar Romero were absolutely iconic as Batman and the Joker.

Adam West’s portrayal of Batman in the 1960s TV series and connected movie captured the essence of the Caped Crusader with his earnest charm and distinctively campy style. West’s take on Batman has become a cultural touchstone that has influenced generations.

Meanwhile, Romero’s Joker set the gold standard for the Clown Prince of Crime. His larger-than-life performance blended manic energy with playful menace, establishing the Joker as a captivating and layered villain. Much as West’s performance inspired future iterations of Batman, so did Romero’s iconic performance as the Joker.

On their own, both portrayals of the characters were standouts. Together, West and Romero’s performances showcased the dynamic contrast between Batman and Joker, contributing significantly to the legacy of the characters.

Their performances continue to resonate with fans all these decades later, showcasing the timeless appeal characters can have when done correctly. Although their legacy is rooted mainly in their back-and-forth in the 1960s TV series, there was no way not to include this iconic duo on the best-of list even if they only appear in one feature film together in the roles.
