Beyond the Spider-Verse gets disappointing release update from producers

If it wasn’t bad enough that Beyond the Spider-Verse has been delayed but the latest update from the producers is not exactly what we’d call promising. 

Following the shocking ending to Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, fans were eager to see where the story would go next when the third and final film in the franchise dropped next spring. So when word broke that Sony had pulled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse from the calendar, fans were understandably disappointed.

When the film was pulled from its March 29, 2024 release date, Sony opted not to immediately give a new release date for the film. This decision to delay the film indefinitely without an exact release date has left fans in a state of panic. Unfortunately, the latest update from one of the producers on the movie isn’t exactly giving fans renewed hope.

During an interview with Digital Spy, writer and producer Phil Lord wouldn’t commit to a timeline for the movie’s release instead telling the outlet that they’ll release it “when it is ready.” He did, however, assure fans that the wait will be worth it.

"“Those conversations are thankfully above our paygrade, but I can tell you we’re already hard at work on it, and we’ll take the time it takes to make it great,”"

Beyond the Spider-Verse release date predictions

Considering the plan was originally to release Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2024, we imagine Sony is going to try to release the film sometime next year. The biggest question would be when exactly the studio might aim to do so.

Across the Spider-Verse was released in June 2022, so a June release date would have seemed like a strong possibility for Beyond the Spider-Verse. However, if June was on the table, one would have thought Sony would have announced the date when revealing the delay — especially since it’s only a few months removed from its March 29 date.

The first film in the franchise opened in December; however, a December release date for Beyond the Spider-Verse seems unlikely given Marvel is currently slated to release Thunderbolts in December and Sony likely wouldn’t want to put the movie in direct competition with that film. It could look to release the film sometime in November ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, though, as there is currently no major superhero or comic book movie slated to arrive during that month at the moment.

The biggest holdup seems to be the needed time to complete the film’s complicated animation style, so without knowing the status of the film’s progress it’s hard to know when Sony might be able to release it. All we know is it’s likely the movie won’t arrive until the second half of 2024 at the absolute soonest.
