Industry-wide release and production delays amid strikes: What does this mean for upcoming movie The Marvels?

In a time when the entertainment industry is in turmoil due to ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), there’s a bit of good news (or bad news, if you’re all for striking in solidarity) for Marvel fans.

Deadline has confirmed that The Marvels will keep its November 10, 2023, release date despite the industry’s challenges. This confirmation came after news of delays for other high-profile films, including Dune: Part Two, Kraven the Hunter, Deadpool 3, and Gladiator 2.

Thanks, AMPTP.

Why isn’t Disney delaying The Marvels?

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have sent ripples through the movie industry, preventing actors from participating in promotional campaigns and leading to delays in several major projects. If these strikes were to continue, movies shifted to 2024 releases or those originally blocked to come out next year could very well continue to be impacted.

However, even with all these delays going on, Marvel Studios has managed to keep all promotional campaigns alive for The Marvels without the cast being involved.

Some speculate that the film could actually move up its release to November 3 since Dune: Part Two was unfortunately rescheduled for 2024. That offers new IMAX availability and less competition with the upcoming The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Warner Bros., for instance, has also maintained its December 20, 2023, release date for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Given Warner Bros.’s recent string of flops and Aquaman 2‘s status as the last DCEU movie before James Gunn’s reboot of the franchise, their decision to stick to the date can definitely be influenced by different factors than Disney’s.

Disney’s double-down confirmation of The Marvels’ release date in the middle of so much uncertainty is slightly off-putting yet relieving, but whether this comes from confidence in the project or other strategic reasons, the House of Mouse hasn’t explicitly said anything.

For the time being, fans can continue to count on The Marvels hitting theaters on its original release date of Friday, November 10, 2023.
