The Undertaker vs. Kurt Angle – No Way Out 2006

When we appreciate The Undertaker’s greatest ever matches, this is one that often gets forgotten about. We’re here to right that wrong today, because this is nothing short of a classic. In fact, we’d go so far as to say it might just be the greatest wresting match of The Phenom’s career.

‘Taker and Kurt Angle had surprising in-ring chemistry. A 2003 encounter on SmackDown already proved that, as the wrestling machine managed to draw out one of The Phenom’s best matches at a time when he wasn’t handing much of them out. So the idea of them meeting again when ‘Taker was in his physical prime should have been incredibly exciting. But here’s the thing, we didn’t know that The Deadman, who was 40 years old at this point, was heading into his physical prime. And, oh, did he show us.

Their World Heavyweight Championship match at No Way Out 2006 is nothing short of spectacular. A showcase of technique, ability, counters, submissions, power, and world-class wrestling, they found the perfect synergy early on, gifting us with a spectacle in which both men were the aggressors, both men were the favorites, and both men knew how to outdo their opponent at every turn.

This is the kind of wrestling match you dream of, and the fact that we could have had this at WrestleMania 22 (instead of ‘Taker’s clash with Mark Henry) makes it a bittersweet one. Yes, more people would give this match the flowers that it deserved if it took place at the Showcase of Immortals, but who knows if it would have been as perfect as this one if they had waited the month. Irrespective of that, their match at No Way Out is a stunner, and it’s time we showed it the appreciation it deserves.

Verdict: BEST
