4. It went on for a little longer than it should have

Riverdale was an adventure through and through. It was a real moment in pop-culture at one point, and continued to reinvent itself throughout its seven-season run. However, each of those reinventions weren’t attempts to stay fresh as much as they were much-needed reboots to freshen things up.

Whether it was the time jump into the future, or the time-hop back into the past, Riverdale‘s rebirths were necessary because its current storylines ran their course pretty quickly after the fourth season. And there were highs and lows with this constant evolving, as not every reinvention landed (the Rivervale event was very hit-and-miss).

I’m certainly not criticizing the constant changes as they were responsible for the eventual season 7 reset (which is one of the show’s strongest seasons), but they were an indicator of how even a show as relentlessly ambitious as Riverdale ran out of ideas at some point.

It’s not uncommon for a show to grow weary the longer that it goes on (and this has indeed been the case with many beloved CW shows) and if we’re being honest, Riverdale probably should have ended after its high school storylines came to a close in season 4 (or maybe season 5 if they did the 1950s storyline then instead).

Nevertheless, we’re thankful for the legendary show’s run and all that it accomplished during it.
