The Amazing Spider-Man 3: To be or not to be, that’s the (million dollar) question. Here’s everything we know about this possible third Andrew Garfield installment.

You know him, you love him, and you’ve only seen him get rebooted three times on the big screen, and a few more times in the animated world. I’m talking about the one and only, iconic, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the unforgettable Spider-Man reboot with the charming Andrew Garfield, released in 2012. It gave us a more serious, more realistic, and awkwardly parental-death-obsessed Peter Parker and spin on Spider-Man world that we know. Even though it did pretty decent in the box office, it never hit the jackpot in terms of sequels.

Well.. that is, until now.

Rumors have surfaced regarding a possible third entry in the Amazing Spider-Man universe. Are they solid rumors? Let’s dive head first into production issues, surprising cameos, and what a third installment could look like.

What happened to the Amazing Spider-Man franchise?

It was in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 where we last saw Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in his own movie – No Way Home doesn’t count for this.

Girlfriend? Dead. Parents? Who knows. Sinister Six? Teased but never delivered. And that was it. The plug was pulled on the franchise and we were left with only two movies.

Despite promising beginnings and having a ton of plans for the franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn’t do as well as expected. Despite Garfield’s excellent portrayal of Spider-Man, critics weren’t kind to it. Instead of making a third movie, Sony decided to wash their hands of the whole deal and team up with Marvel for a reboot starring Tom Holland.

What has been said about The Amazing Spider-Man 3?

Spider-Man: No Way Home gave something all of us Spider-Man fans loved very much: three iconic Spider-Man, three different Peter Parkers, three amazing storylines and timelines and universes collided, and what I consider the best Spider-Man movie to date.

Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Holland served us a multiverse buddy comedy that entertained us and filled us all with nostalgia. Shortly after that, to nobody’s surprise, rumors start swirling: “Could The Amazing Spider-Man 3 actually happen?”

Fan petitions went through the roof, Twitter exploded, and debates upon debates on the internet covered every single possible angle of storytelling and character arcs for an imaginary third movie. Someone somewhere even summoned the Spider-Verse to make it real.

But things didn’t really start heating up around the subject until former MCU’s attorney Paul Sarker had an interview with Animated Times and said that, yes – a third The Amazing Spider-Man movie is possible:

"“Anything’s possible from a legal standpoint. That doesn’t mean it’s possible from a business or creative standpoint, but legally as lawyers, we often respond to the direction and requests of business and creative teams. I know Sony has the exclusive rights to Spider-Man. In theory, if Andrew Garfield wanted to be part of this franchise moving forward, in Amazing Spider-Man 3, and there was a budget for it… Legally, the sides could work out whatever paperwork needed to be done to make that happen.”"

Is Andrew Garfield interested in The Amazing Spider-Man 3?

Andrew Garfield’s enthusiasm about revisiting his Spider-Man role is very palpable and hard to ignore. He told the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year that he’s ready to don the suit again, but under the right circumstances, and with a story that serves the character and the audience.

So, yes.

Garfield also hinted that there is more story to be told in the official art book of Spider-Man: No Way Home:

"“The story never ends, whether we film it or not. There’s a story happening in a universe somewhere. There’s endless potential with this character and all the different iterations. So, yeah, he’s definitely out there doing something.”"

What would The Amazing Spider-Man 3 be about?

A rollercoaster of emotions, stakes, and maybe even a crossover with Tom Hardy’s Venom could be in store for a third installment. With the multiverse now wide open, we could finally get a Sinister Six appearance, or even a redemption arc for Peter’s relationship with Gwen Stacy, courtesy of another reality’s Spider-Gwen. Nobody really knows, but judging by the gravity of the story from both Amazing Spider-Man movies, it would be quite the tale regardless.

As Garfield mentioned in the official art book for No Way Home, the film changed his Peter Parker’s life and sent him back to his universe feeling reinvigorated:

"“It’s changed his life. He’s going back knowing that he has brothers. He’s going back in re-inspired to follow his destiny, his calling – the purpose of his life. By catching MJ, he got to make up for a terrible tragedy that he tried to avoid in his world. If he hadn’t been in Peter 1’s world, then it’s possible MJ may have met the same fate as Gwen. His presence was a purpose presence in that regard. And I think he’s going back with a mind blown about the cosmos and the universe and string theory and multiple dimensionality. He’s going back incredibly reinvigorated.”"

Why would Marvel have two Spider-Man franchises at the same time?

Initially, that would seem like a character confusion waiting to happen with Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield playing the same-but-not-the-same Peter Parker. But now, given the multiverse’s success, Marvel could be warming up to the idea.

Even Tom Holland is on board, basically giving his blessing to pass the torch back to Garfield for a movie or two:

"“That scene where he saved Zendaya like the fan reactions in the theater, was so spectacular,” Holland said. “So, should Sony decide to do that? They would have my full support, and obviously, so would Andrew.”"

Will we see more of Spider-Man even if this movie doesn’t get made?

If anything, Spider-Man: No Way Home showed us that fans have room in their hearts for more than one Spider-Man. And if Andrew Garfield does come back to reprise his role, you can bet audiences will be excited and waiting to see where the story takes them.

While there isn’t any official confirmation of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 being made, these rumors are a testament to how fans can change the course of a franchise. Maybe if we make enough noise, we’ll get our Andrew Garfield Peter Parker back for more.
