Batman and Catwoman are at war in new DC series
By Mark Lynch
The battle between Batman and Catwoman begins in the newest DC Comics Bat Family crossover, Gotham War.
DC Comics announced that Batman and Catwoman would fight for the right to protect Gotham City. However, they didn’t mention how it began. Considering it would have spoiled the ending of DC Comics: Knight Terrors, that makes sense.
After Insomnia was defeated, Batman collapsed. The combination of being controlled by Deadman and his recent trauma shut Bruce’s body down. Eight weeks later, he wakes up and Gotham has changed. Violent crime is down 75% and it’s thanks to Catwoman.
Selina Kyle knows that major villains like Mr. Freeze and Joker need henchmen. Catwoman took their goons away by giving them them a choice: Continue to hench for villains who don’t care about their well-being or learn a trade. The trade is becoming a better criminal. She taught them the dos and don’ts of being a cat burglar. More importantly, she gave them rules. Among them is only robbing the rich, giving 15% of their earnings to charity, and no violent crimes. Now that Batman is awake, it’s time to have a conversation about what’s next.
Catwoman sets up a meeting with the entire Bat Family. Tim Drake was on the fence about what Selina was doing. He said he needed more data. Stephanie Brown (Batgirl), Duke Thomas (Signal), and Jason Todd (Red Hood) agreed with her. Damian Wayne, on the other hand, said all Catwoman is doing is training lawbreakers to be better criminals. Batman felt the same way. He also said that a crime is still a crime. Before storming out, he mentioned that his family was rich. Did they deserve to be robbed?
"“I’ll fight you all if I have to. The mission has been tainted: We stop crime.” – Batman"
At the end of DC Comics: Gotham War No. 1, one of the henchmen Selina trained attempted to rob someone. He did everything right. Made sure the family would be on vacation, snuck in, and only took jewellery. Unfortunately, he didn’t plan for someone to stay home while their family left. The woman shot and killed the burglar in what she deemed to be self-defense. This gives Batman all the evidence he needs. To him, Catwoman is wrong and the mission has been tainted.
It doesn’t end there. Waiting in the wind is The Riddler. He’s biding his time and waiting to see if Batman will need his, “friendship.” Will he accept Riddler’s help? Is Catwoman right?
