Superman and Lois season 4 is not coming to The CW in September 2023
The CW might be kicking off its fall line-up within the next month but Superman and Lois season 4 won’t be a part of. When can fans expect it to premiere?
It’s going to be a long wait for new episodes of Superman and Lois. The critically-acclaimed DC TV show may have aired its third season this year, but its fourth is understandably not going to premiere on TV screens anytime soon.
The show was finally renewed for a fourth season earlier this year after The CW had lengthy negotiations with Warner Bros. about bringing it back for another year. Those same discussions also saw the renewal of All American: Homecoming and the cancellation of fellow DC TV show Gotham Knights.
The network, under the new leadership of Nexstar, now prefers its original content to be cheaper, so even though Superman and Lois was its joint most-watched show last season (along with Walker), its expensive price tag cast doubt over its renewal. Thankfully, the Man of Steel and the intrepid reporter lived to fight another day as the show was renewed for a fourth season (with conditions).
Unfortunately, season 4 won’t premiere anytime soon. The CW is one of the only places you will find scripted content during the fall TV season, but Superman and Lois season 4 won’t be part of that line-up in the fall.
Superman and Lois season 4 release updates
Superman and Lois season 4 is set to premiere on The CW in 2024. While it was one of the only four original shows renewed by the acquisition-heavy network, its renewal came after it had confirmed its fall line-up, meaning that it was always going to premiere next year.
However, it will likely be well into the new year before it premieres. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still ongoing, meaning that production has not yet been able to commence on the new season of the show. It will understandably remain that way until the studios reach an agreement with the writers and actors.
Nexstar CEO Perry Sook spoke about the potential of Superman and Lois (and the other three CW original shows) getting delayed, commenting:
"“The farther the strike goes on, they get pushed further and further into 2024”."
If the strikes continue on past September, many of the returning network TV shows may face episode cuts as there simply would not be enough time to get 13-episode seasons produced before the end of the TV season in May. Superman and Lois has a slight advantage here, as one of Nexstar’s conditions for its renewal was a shorter episode count of 10 episodes, so there is a good chance that it might not face an episode-cut when production resumes.
Another one of the renewal conditions was a cast cut, which saw seven of the show’s series regulars exit, but the good news is that most of them are expected to return in recurring or guest roles.
