For two years, fans have been wondering if WandaVision could return for a second season. Now it seems that they have their answer.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off Phase Four with the first of its Disney Plus shows. That show was WandaVision and it quickly made itself at home in the entertainment landscape, dominating pop-culture conversations throughout its nine-episode run (and long after it) and setting a very high precedent for the MCU’s new era.
Whether or not the rest of Phase Four lived up to that standard is up for debate but the success of WandaVision caught a lot of people off-guard as it even garnered over 20 Emmy nominations. It also gave some long overdue spotlight to Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision, making for a compelling (and fun) nine-episode story that made us feel all the emotions.
In the years since its debut, fans have been wondering if we could see it return for a second season. Unfortunately, it now seems like Marvel Studios has officially closed the book on that chapter of the MCU.
Marvel seems to confirm no season 2 for WandaVision
After almost three years, some of the earliest Disney Plus shows are finally getting released on Blu-ray and UHD (complete with their own SteelBook cases), meaning that fans can add them to their physical media collections. Among those releases is WandaVision, which hits shelves on November 28, 2023. However, as you can see from the tweet below, the release is marketed as WandaVision: The Complete Series.
This might not come as a shock to audiences in the UK who use the word “series” when referring to seasons, but it confirms that WandaVision won’t be returning for a second season – especially when you factor in how Loki season 1’s release is being marketed as Loki: The Complete First Season (which shouldn’t come as a surprise given that Loki season 2 is debuting on Disney Plus in October).
While expectations and hopes for a second season of WandaVision have significantly decreased over the years since its debut, there was always the hope that it could return in some capacity – especially after the Scarlet Witch’s current absence in the MCU. But that seemingly won’t be the case now.
The other ways Marvel has continued WandaVision’s story
While WandaVision season 2 may have been ruled out now, that hasn’t prevented Marvel Studios from following through on many of the storylines it set up.
The most significant of those was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which saw the Scarlet Witch corrupted by the Darkhold when she used it to search the multiverse for other versions of Tommy and Billy. The silver screen also holds the next chapter of Monica Rambeau’s story, as Teyonah Parris will reprise her role in The Marvels this November, when she shares the screen with Captain Marvel‘s Brie Larson and Ms. Marvel‘s Iman Vellani.
The Disney Plus series is also receiving its own official spinoff. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (formerly titled Agatha: House of Harkness and Agatha: Coven of Chaos) will bring back Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, a.k.a. Agnes of Westview, and it’s set to premiere on the streamer around Halloween 2024. Debra Jo Rupp, who played Mrs. Hart on WandaVision, is also set to reprise her role in the spinoff, and she even referred to it as essentially being “the second season of WandaVision“.
That might not be the only spinoff, either, as Paul Bettany is expected to reprise his role as the White Vision in rumored series Vision Quest.
So, while the thought of no WandaVision season 2 is definitely disheartening for those holding out hope for the show’s return, the series’ impact will continue to be felt throughout the next phases of the MCU.
