12. “Rewind” (Season 5, Episode 5)
At the end of season 4, the entire team, except for Fitz, was kidnapped from a diner and ended up in space decades in the future. Shortly after, Fitz is arrested by the government and taken to a military facility, where after interrogating him, they realize he doesn’t know where the others are but give him enough materials to figure it out. Unsatisfied with his theory that they got abducted by aliens, General Hale threatens to keep Fitz there until he dies, but Lance Hunter, posing as his lawyer, arrives to help him escape.
After fleeing, an examination of the security footage leads them to meet Enoch, an alien sent to Earth thousands of years ago to record human history. Enoch explains that he was instructed to send the team into the future to prevent an apocalyptic event. When Fitz demands to be taken to the person who gave the instructions, Enoch takes them to Robin, a young girl who can see the future. Robin tells Fitz that the reason he was left behind is because he needs to save his friends. Enoch takes them all back to the present-day Lighthouse, where he sent the team in the future.
Fitz and Hunter break back into the military base to recover the pod Enoch arrived on Earth in, also discovering a Quinjet that they use to escape. Fitz says goodbye to Hunter and freezes his body in the pod so that he can reunite with the team in 2091, later being woken up by Enoch, who accompanied him on the mission.
The episode showed us a different side of Fitz following his experience in the Framework, which turned him into a more ruthless individual. While we knew he would arrive in the future, seeing the process of him getting there was interesting. It was also great seeing Hunter again, primarily since he got written off to give him and Bobbi a spinoff, which never ended up happening. His friendship with Fitz is one of the show’s best dynamics, and their interactions always result in hilarious moments. This one was no exception.
