11. What They Become – (Season 2, Episode 10)
After capturing Skye, Ward takes her to her father, Calvin Zabo, at HYDRA. While Skye is initially enraged by her father, he explains that Whitehall killed her mother and how he was only working with him and HYDRA to get back to her. He tells her that her mother had special abilities and that it’s her destiny to inherit them. During their conversation, Calvin gets summoned by Whitehall but secretly plans to kill him.
Whitehall brings Skye out and forces her to touch Diviner, a mysterious artifact obtained by HYDRA. Rather than killing her, as it had to others, it deemed her worthy and glowed when she came in contact with it. Confirming her identity, Whitehall locks up her, her father, and Ward to deal with later. After Hunter and Bobbi verify the location, SHIELD arrives at the facility to rescue Skye. Calvin breaks free, but before he and Whitehall can fight, Whitehall gets shot and killed by Coulson.
Zabo attacks Coulson for robbing him of his chance to get revenge on the man who ruined his life, but Skye stops him. When Raina gets her hands on the Diviner and takes it into the underground Kree city, Skye chases after her. Coulson goes in behind them and, after learning that Skye’s in danger due to the bombs he just planted to destroy the city, Triplett goes back down to disarm them.
Raina makes her way to the temple, where Skye ultimately finds her. The Diviner gravitates from her hand to a pillar in the center of the temple just as Triplett barely makes it inside before the walls shut around them. The Diviner opens, revealing a cluster of Terrigen Crystals and releasing a mist that encases Raina and Skye in cacoons. Trying to save Skye, Triplett kicks the Crystals, but a shard gets stuck in his stomach, turning him to stone. Raina and Skye start to break out from their cocoons, the latter emerging with a shockwave that violently shakes the city and causes Triplett’s body to crumble.
Skye’s identity had been a mystery since she first appeared in the series and only started to be unraveled in season 2. The emotional reunion between her and her father answered plenty of the questions that had been built up regarding her past while also bringing up a bunch more. This episode was not only the first proper introduction to Inhumans, which became an integral part of the show but also the first important step in Skye’s evolution as a character. The tragic loss of Agent Triplett was also a gut punch that many weren’t expecting.
