8. Turn, Turn, Turn – (Season 1, Episode 17)

Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is mainly a spy show, it makes sense that one of its best episodes would be full of double-crosses. Coulson and Skye confront May about the secret phone discovered in the walls of the Bus, which she reveals was a direct line to Fury. After being attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D. jets, John Garrett joins the team on the Bus. Shortly after, Skye uncovers an encrypted message, revealing that HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. The group decides to rescue Agent Simmons and Agent Triplett, who are at the Hub, one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s headquarters.

While at the Hub, Triplett and Simmons get discovered by the agents there and brought before Victoria Hand. As a test, Victoria Hand offers them the choice to swear loyalty to HYDRA. When they refuse, she realizes that she can trust them but is under the belief that Coulson is HYDRA. After he slips up while talking to Coulson, Garret reveals himself as the Clairvoyant, the person behind Project Centipede, and an agent of HYDRA.

May, Fitz, and Coulson get surrounded by HYDRA agents, and Garrett gives them the opportunity to join him. The trio successfully fights back, and Garrett gets apprehended by Hand, who heard Coulson’s refusal and knows he’s loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. While on their way to the Fridge, Hand offers Ward the chance to shoot Garrett in revenge. Instead, he kills her and two other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents guarding Garrett, revealing himself as another member of HYDRA.

While previous episodes had connections to the films, like showing the team cleaning up London after the battle from Thor: The Dark World, this was the first real connection of story arcs between the films and the series. The episode initially aired a week after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and provided a connectivity that enhanced both stories. Even for fans who enjoyed the first few episodes of the series, this is the episode that many consider to be where the show really picks up. The reveal that Ward, a key member of the team and one of the first characters we get introduced to, was HYDRA the entire time was a bold move and goes down as one of the most shocking moments of the series.
