Comic book: The curse of having popular superpowers
By Mark Lynch
Would you take any of these nine comic book superpowers knowing what they come with? You may not after you read this article.
When people think about having superpowers, they rarely consider the negatives. Each power comes with something negative.
In X-Men 2, Cyclops says that Jean Grey moves things with her telekinesis in her sleep. That could lead to a new look or broken furniture. If Luke Cage needs immediate surgery, then there has to be a power dampener or an adamantium blade handy. Otherwise, it’s impossible to cut through his skin. This is a situation that came up in Secret War (2004) and New Avengers No. 58.
This article is going to point out the curse that comes with superpowers. Some of them are minor. Others may have you reconsidering wanting some of these abilities. Let’s start with one of the most popular.
Teleportation
Comic book characters: Nightcrawler, Blink
Getting from one place to the next without the assistance of public transportation would be amazing. If you drive, then you’ll never be stuck in traffic again. Just go from place to place in an instant. What would stink is teleporting into something.
One of the dangers teleporters talk about is appearing where something else is. It could cause massive pain or death. Also, there are limits to teleporters. Nightcrawler can go miles. Meanwhile, a comic book character like Blink from the Exiles comic book can go from Earth to the moon. However, even with Blink, she runs a major risk when teleporting blindly.
