Comic book: The curse of having popular superpowers
By Mark Lynch
Shape-Shifting
Comic book character: Mystique, Clayface, Skylar
It’s doubtful that everyone loves everything about themselves. Maybe it’s a wrinkle, weight, or hair color. Sometimes you may want to look like someone else altogether. Shape-shifting makes it possible to get rid of anything you may not like.
In Heroes, Skylar shows a side that many people may not think of. He started waking up as a different person and even started to forget who he was. This makes sense. The more you look like other people, the more you’ll forget yourself. This happened to Deadpool’s girlfriend Vanessa as well. Also, in some cases, changing your body isn’t as simple as changing. It can be painful.
Telepathy
Comic book characters: Charles Xavier, Jean Grey
Telepathy is among the most well-liked superpowers. Reading someone’s mind is only the beginning. Controlling people is the biggest draw. With this, there’s just the ethical dilemma. In Illuminati No. 4, Xavier mentioned that the brain will sometimes fight back if they’re forced to do something they normally wouldn’t. Even if they did what they were told, there would be long-term effects.
On top of the moral aspect, telepathy takes more practice to master than any ability on this list. In fact, it takes training to just have it. Telepathy means never getting random voices out of your head. Even the most powerful ones have trouble doing it. You may never get a moment of silence.
