House of the Dragon might not have been affected by the strikes, but The Last of Us showrunner has confirmed The Last of Us wasn’t so lucky.
Filming on the second season of House of the Dragon might not be affected by the strikes, but it seems the same cannot be said for HBO’s other hit drama, The Last of Us.
While the creative team was able to map out the plan for season 2 prior to the strike, showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that only one script for the season was completed before the WGA strike began earlier this year.
Not only has work on the second season been delayed, but Mazin has confirmed it’s now clear the show will not be able to begin filming when they originally intended due to the ongoing strikes.
“I think it’s becoming essentially a near certainty that we won’t be able to start when we were hoping to start, which is upsetting,” Mazin revealed, confirming filming is in fact going to be delayed and the timeline for production has shifted.
The Last of Us season 2 release date predictions
Considering that filming on The Last of Us might not be able to begin until the end of the year or early next year, the odds of seeing the second season of HBO’s hit drama in 2024 is looking quite slim. What is starting to look more likely is that fans will have to wait until 2025 for the second season to arrive, which would mark a longer break than many fans might have hoped for.
As disappointing as it might be to think of The Last of Us season 2 not arriving until 2025, a long hiatus between seasons isn’t exactly new for HBO fans.
Many HBO shows have taken longer breaks between seasons including House of the Dragon. Its first season debuted in 2022 and isn’t slated to return until 2024, meaning there will be about a two-year break between season 1 and season 2. So it’s not entirely shocking to know that there is likely to be a similar break between the first and second seasons of The Last of Us as well.
This actually could work in the show’s favor as there is a strong chance The Last of Us will be HBO’s biggest release of 2025, making it likely the show will get a prime spot in the network’s lineup.
And while you wait for season 2, you can always pass the time by enjoying the video games that inspired the series which are currently available!
