21. Dreamer
Nia Nal is one of the most revolutionary and inspiring characters in TV history. The first transgender superhero on TV, Dreamer was portrayed by Nicole Maines throughout Supergirl‘s final three seasons but it only took one episode for viewers to fall in love with her.
A quirky and eager-to-learn-the-ropes reporter at CatCo, Nia quickly made an impression on Kara, James Olsen, Brainiac-5 and all of Supergirl‘s viewers. But it soon became clear that there was more to her than her intrepid reporting, as the young woman struggled to stay awake a lot of the time. The reason for that? Well, it was down to the fact that she was a descendent from a family of aliens with the ability to both dream the future and harness dream energy.
Joining the Super Friends, Dreamer proved to be a formidable superhero, just as Nia proved to be an endearing part of the ever-changing CatCo environment. And that sincerity was brought to life beautifully by the brilliant Nicole Maines.
The one drawback of Dreamer’s time on the show is that it never felt like the writers were giving her the exploration she deserved, with her struggles to harness her powers often ending up forgotten about, and only truly coming to the forefront right before the show concluded. Nonetheless, Maines’ historic performance shines above all else and leaves us hoping that we’ll see the beloved character again one day.
