18. Jay Garrick

Veteran speedster and comic book legend Jay Garrick first made his presence felt on the Arrowverse during The Flash‘s second season when it was revealed that he had been taken prisoner by the terrifying Zoom, and forced to wear an iron mask that inhibited his powers. But when the mask finally came off, it left all of Team Flash (and us viewers) reeling, as they discovered that Jay was the Earth-3 doppelgänger of Barry’s father, Henry Allen.

Saving the lives of Central City citizens in his dimension, he is the Earth-3 Flash. However, that hasn’t stopped him from making semi-regular appearances on the show. Being a veteran superhero, he is often on hand to guide Barry (or scold him for his mistakes), and can be called upon by Earth-1’s Team Flash whenever he is needed. He even locked himself in the Speed Force’s prison to protect Earth-1 (and Wally West) from any permanent damage.

Jay Garrick is undoubtedly an icon of DC Comics, and given John Wesley Shipp’s previous association with The Flash franchise (he played the Scarlet Speedster in the ’90s Flash TV series), it made total sense that the creative team behind the current series would entrust him with such an important role.
