10. J’onn J’onzz

Supergirl‘s debut season did a great job of pulling the wool over our eyes when it came to D.E.O. Director Hank Henshaw. Firm and abrupt with a no-nonsense approach, Henshaw was often rather scathing and cold towards Supergirl as she attempted to follow in her cousin’s footsteps as a hero, and this made him somewhat unlikable. However, this would all turn out to be a front as he soon revealed himself to be none other than iconic DC hero J’onn J’onzz.

Not only was the CGI Martian Manhunter that stood before us incredible for television, it’s impossible to describe just how genuinely shocking that moment was. Moreover, it marked the beginning of a new era for the character as he would transform from a near-tyrannical leader (like the real Hank Henshaw) to a superhero in his own right. Following that, J’onn was able to take part in missions that he would have once watched unfold on monitors and he was every bit as effective as his Kryptonian colleague.

Bringing a character as legendary as the Martian Manhunter into Supergirl not only suggested that the show is capable of landing some of DC’s main-event characters (something that it would prove again when it finally introduced Superman), it opened the Arrowverse up to the rich history of Mars and the battles that took place between the White and Green Martians. And it also allowed us to see a worthy portrayal of this beloved, underappreciated character.

A symbol of hope that is always on-hand to provide Kara with all the advice she needs, J’onn truly strives to make the world a better place – which really says a lot, considering that it isn’t his home planet.
