19. Gwyn Davies

When Matt Ryan’s iconic John Constantine was written out of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow after season 6 (to make way for a Constantine HBO Max series that never materialized), the show came up with an appropriately unique way to keep the actor on the show: Casting him as the inventor of time travel itself, of course!

The Legends’ Waverider was destroyed at the end of the sixth season, leaving them stranded in 1925. They then turned to the man responsible for inventing time travel in the hopes that they can figure out a way home. That man was the lovable Gwyn Davies, who was both bewildered and amused by the crazies that the Legends had inflicted on him.

Gwyn was a very different character from Constantine. He was a little rough-around-the-edges, sure, but he was an incredibly cuddly character who wore his heart on his sleeve. He was the salt of the earth with a heart of gold, and he felt everything so very deeply. That’s why he ended up inventing time travel, because he wanted to save his boyfriend Alun who had died.

Gwyn was such a lovable addition to the show, and the fact that Legends kept introducing such strong characters seven seasons in was a testament to its writing. One of the great tragedies of its cancellation is that we never got to spend more time with him.
