4. Jake Johnson

You won’t find a more nuanced portrayal of Peter Parker than Jake Johnson’s outing in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Some might even call Peter B. Parker the most realistic Spider-Man of them all. That’s up to you to decide, but Johnson voices the character with the right balance of heart and grit that it’s hard to argue against it.

Broken down by 22 years of being a superhero, tragedy, some bad life decisions, the end of his marriage to MJ, and the physical repercussions of the life he was living, Peter was a shell of the enthusiastic young man he once was. So the last thing he wanted to be was a mentor to Miles Morales. And yet, that’s exactly what he needed.

The fact that Johnson was able to capture all of that in his voice performance is just incredible. The monologue in which Peter B. introduces himself is so bittersweet, so tragic and yet full of dark humor. It’s something that Johnson is so good at, and it feels like an authentic representation of Peter, who always knew how to make some awkward jokes in even the most upsetting of his situations.

Peter has seen a lot, he is withered by life, and yet deep down he’s still Peter. His journey is one of the Spider-Verse‘s most compelling and Johnson’s layered performance stands out in an already stacked cast of amazing performers.
