Iron Man proposes to Emma Frost of the X-Men in an incredibly haphazard way imaginable.
Ever since the X-Men: Hellfire Gala, Emma Frost has been on the run. The good news is she has people helping her. She signed over her fortune to Wilson Fisk. That protected her money from going to the U.S. government. That’s less funding for mutants to be hunted.
Emma also has Tony Stark (the Invincible Iron Man). He created a ring that’s keeping Emma Frost’s mutant abilities from being detected. While she’s undetected, Emma is moving around under the alias, Hazel Kendall. It was working flawlessly until Emma saw Feilong and was prepared to kill him.
As Emma (currently Hazel Kendall) is preparing to erase his memory, one of the architects of the Mutant Massacre was directly in front of her. Before she could react, Tony Stark grabbed her. He brings her into a room and says she can’t wipe his memory. If she does, Tony can’t make improvements to his Iron Man armor. Plus, she’d need to take her ring off to use her powers. That would bring Sentinels and Orchis into the Hellfire Club. Emma decided to go for it anyway. As one of the X-Men and Iron Man fight in their civilian forms, Feilong enters the room, he sees Stark on one knee holding a ring. Feilong asks if Tony is proposing, and he says he’s trying to.
Comic book weddings are almost always full of shenanigans. This is one of the few times where the writer recalls the proposal was wacky. Especially since this was promoted as the wedding of the year. This wasn’t a bold move by Iron Man and the X-Men or a proposal for love or a way to tie in mutant and human relations. This was an accident. And, as silly as this may be, this writer loves it. Plus, Gerry Duggan is an incredible writer. There will be more to this coming up in Invincible Iron Man No. 10.
Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out what’s next for what Marvel Comics is calling, “The most exceptional power couple.”
