One Piece season 2: Everything we know so far about season 2
The live-action Straw Hats aren’t done yet! The sea is calling, and more epic adventures are on the horizon in One Piece season 2!
Netflix’s One Piece came into our lives with a fantastic first season, quickly becoming a fan-favorite and earning a whopping 18.5 million views in its first few days of release.
I have to admit, I was very pleased with it myself. This refreshing take on the giant anime IP is a collaboration between Tomorrow Studios, manga creator Eiichiro Oda, and publisher Shueisha, and it had a lot of pressure to be successful given the disappointing performance of Netflix’s previous live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop and the other ones we don’t talk about (Bleach and Death Note are two of the worst ones).
The show has been a big hit for Netlfix, finally breaking its anime live-action adaptation curse with more One Piece still to come! A second season is officially happening and we’ve rounded up evertthigbn there is to know so far about the show’s upcoming season! Last Updated: September 14, 2023.
Is One Piece season 2 happening?
THIS IS NOT A DRILL. One Piece, the show that took the world by storm, has been renewed for a second season! The big news was confirmed by none other than the legendary Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the anime himself. Oda-Sensei shared this exciting nugget of gold through this amazing video:
What will One Piece season 2 be about?
While we don’t know the specifics yet – like how many episodes we’re gonna get or what crazy stories will unfold – Eiichiro Oda, One Piece Creator, Illustrator and Executive Producer, teased that the Straw Hats might just be needing a great doctor.:
"“To the Straw Hat Grand Fleet: What did you think of Season 1 of the live-action ONE PIECE? I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios. It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it.To everyone who’s been a fan of ONE PIECE for years, and to those who experienced ONE PIECE for the first time, thank you so much. Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show! The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward! It’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient. From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor… We will see!”"
Does One Piece season 2 have a release date?
While Netflix has not yet confirmed when One Piece season 2 will be coming, producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements intend on carrying this momentum into a second season, and they’ve shared that scripts are already in place! We do know we aren’t likely to see season 2 arrive anytime soon.
In an interview with Variety, Clements hinted it will take roughly 12-18 months to complete the season meaning we’re not likely to see season 2 premiere until late 2024 or possibly 2025:
"“Realistically, hopefully, a year away, if we move very quickly, and that is a possibility,” Clements revealed of the timeline. “Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air.”"
One Piece season 1 viewership numbers
One Piece is the #1 title globally on Netflix, reaching a whopping 37.8 million views in less than two weeks. And that’s not all. It’s hit the Top 10 in 93 countries and debuted at #1 in 46 of them.
If that doesn’t spell “successful adaptation, please continue”, I don’t know what does.
