House of the Dragon season 2 is not coming to HBO in 2023
By Cody Schultz
House of the Dragon season 2 might not have been directly impacted by the ongoing strikes, but don’t expect the second season to hit HBO before 2023 ends.
If you’re hoping to see a new season of HBO’s hit series House of the Dragon arrive before the end of the year, we have some disappointing news for you.
While the Game of Thrones spinoff has not been affected by the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes which have forced production on most shows and movies to halt, the hit series will still not be complete in time for season 2 to premiere this year. That’s right, House of the Dragon won’t be soaring back onto HBO’s schedule this year due to the fact that production on the highly anticipated second season is still underway at HBO.
Even before the strikes started shutting down production on some of the biggest shows and movies in Hollywood, HBO never intended to release a new season of House of the Dragon in 2023. This is due to the grand scale of the show’s production which requires months of shooting as well as extensive post-production in order to create the breathtaking world of the show.
The good news is that the show does not face a delay like many other hit series!
House of the Dragon season 2 release date predictions
Currently, HBO’s plan is to release House of the Dragon season 2 sometime in 2024. While no exact release date or release window has been announced by the network, the expectation is that the network will once again look to premiere the season sometime in late summer with new episodes then airing into the fall.
Season 1 premiered on August 21, 2022, allowing HBO to air new episodes through October 23, 2022. This release strategy worked quite nicely for the network with ratings growing over the season leading up to the season finale giving HBO its best viewership since Game of Thrones ended.
Barring any unexpected delays, it seems highly likely HBO will look to premiere season 2 of House of the Dragon in August 2024 with Sunday, August 25, 2024, looking like a possible premiere date for the season. This would put it on pace with the release schedule for season 1 and as they always say, if it’s not broken why fix it?
An August 2024 premiere would allow HBO to once again have new episodes to debut through the early part of the fall and set the show up for yet another successful run!
