Fruits Basket

On the completely polar opposite side of the spectrum from Elfen Lied is Fruits Basket, the kind of anime you watch on a rainy and grey day, covered in a blanket, and with copious amounts of popcorn. And a tissue box.

As a long-time fan of the original IP myself, seeing real people bringing to life the sweet Tohru Honda and all the fantastically unique Sohma family members would be a dream come true. This popular IP already has a sizable built-in fanbase that would go bananas (pun intended) over seeing their favorite characters navigating high school life, family curses, and deep emotional growth in the flesh.

Fruits Basket is a perfect mix of comedy, drama, and romance, with just a sprinkle of supernatural – the perfect recipe for a live-action adaptation. Plus, I’d love to see how they’d pull off the zodiac animal transformations on-screen. The special effects alone would be great, and Tohru’s constant awkward reactions as Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure transform would be hilarious to see done by an actual person.

Fruits Basket already resonates with fans globally, and would most definitely do so with “normie” audiences as it tackles real-life issues. From coping with loss and handling complicated family dynamics to understanding the importance of self-acceptance, Fruits Basket is more of a life lesson than anything else.

While the zodiac curse adds a layer of fantasy, the core of the series is a touching, human story that anyone can relate to. And the chance to see those heartwarming and tear-jerking moments acted out by a talented cast? That’s the cherry on top of this fruit basket that we all want and definitely deserve. I mean, as long as they cast the glorious Ayame Sohma properly, we won’t have any issues.
