The reggaeton superstar Bad Bunny has officially severed his ties with the superhero movie El Muerto, leaving fans and entertainment gurus alike shocked.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but If you were eagerly anticipating seeing Bad Bunny appear as El Muerto in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off, you’re going to be disappointed.

I know, it stings. But actually happened?

When originally announced, El Muerto drew both excitement and confusion for fans as he was definitely not the Spider-Man villain they expected to see on-screen in a spin-off, but fans did warm up to the idea of the movie after Bad Bunny was announced to be playing the villain.

What happened with the El Muerto movie?

During a recent interview between Bad Bunny and Vanity Fair, he is asked about the El Muerto project and… hesitates. Reportedly, a weird and awkward silence fills the air, to the point where his publicist, Sujeylee Solá, has to step in with a “Next question.”

We all know what that means – that’s Hollywood talk for “Yeah, let’s not go there.”

Bad Bunny himself couldn’t provide much clarity either. “I don’t know what to say,” he responded, describing the situation as “delicate.” Solá puts the final nail in the coffin by saying, “Obviously, it’s [El Muerto] out.”

Even though the Spider-Man spin-off is a no-go, Bad Bunny’s acting aspirations are still very much alive. Interestingly, he admitted he’s not a huge fan of action films which really begs the question: Was El Muerto, the mystical-mask-wearing character never before seen in live-action, the right fit for Bad Bunny? Or was it too much of a stretch?

Unfortunately, that doesn’t just mean El Muerto‘s mask won’t be worn by Bad Bunny – but perhaps never it will be by anyone else, either. That is kind of a bummer for us Latinx fans who were excited to see a Latinx villain, but we can all rejoice in the face we did get a really amazing superhero with our heritage this year, brought to us by DC – Blue Beetle.

The mystery surrounding why exactly Bad Bunny and El Muerto parted ways might never be truly answered – though we do hope it will be. But one thing’s for sure: even with El Muerto still being delayed due to the strikes and possibly other reasons (on top of having to recast El Muerto himself) and very likely ending up canceled sometime in the future, there are other Spider-Man plans and projects revolving around our favorite friendly neighborhood hero and his nemeses – like Kraven the Hunter.

It’s a sad day seeing a fun project take this much of a blow, but who knows? El Muerto could get recast and the project could get life breathed into it again. We just need to wait and see where the pieces fall.
