5. The Flash Season 3: Finish Line

The season finale of The Flash’s third season, “Finish Line”, which aired on May 23, 2017, finds its spot on our list as the fifth worst and fifth best in The Flash season finale history. While there were moments where the pacing felt a tad hurried, there were also aspects that left us reasonably content with the resolutions to several key storylines. Here are a few more details about why we’ve positioned it as the fifth best/worst:

Major sacrifices: In season 3’s finale, Barry sacrifices himself to the Speed Force to atone for his time-traveling actions and save Central City. We felt that this particular moment in the show was extremely powerful and evoked strong emotions from us. However, it wasn’t the sole act of selflessness in the episode! When H.R. Wells selflessly sacrifices himself to save Iris West from the clutches of Savitar, it was an extremely touching moment and a perfect twist for the finale.

Savitar’s defeat: Unlike some of the previous season finales we’ve covered so far, in the final showdown between Team Flash and the season’s villain Savitar their well-earned victory felt gratifying and filled us with a sense of fulfillment and admiration for the characters’ growth and resilience.

Time remnants confusion: Although overall we felt satisfied with season 3’s finale, we did feel that the use of time remnants in the finale was at times a bit hard to follow and confusing as it was not clear how they were being used or why they were necessary. Additionally, the time remnant subplot felt hurried and inadequately explored, leaving us with a sense of unfulfillment when it was eventually resolved. This rushed treatment detracted from the overall enjoyment of the episode and left us wishing for a more comprehensive and coherent exploration of this concept.

Overall, we feel that season 3’s finale provided a generally satisfying conclusion, marred only by minor issues. As a result, we feel confident in its ranking as the fifth-best and fifth-worst installment in The Flash’s season finale history.
