Looking for a movie to watch on Disney Plus this weekend? We have an updated recommendation list of what you should watch and what you should skip!

We’ve finally made it to the weekend, readers, and if you’re anything like us here at Bam Smack Pow, you’re starting to put together your weekend watch list. Over on the East Coast, it’s forecasted to rain all weekend, meaning I already know I’ll be binging shows and movies for hours. Are you looking to do the same? Of course, Disney Plus is one of the best streaming services available as it offers a variety of classics and new titles, including the lineup of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and shows.

Though we don’t have a new MCU title to check out yet — Loki season 2 premieres in less than two weeks on Oct. 5 — there are recent additions to the Disney Plus lineup, some of which you’ll want to watch and others you’ll want to skip. Looking for a good movie or two to watch with the family this weekend? We’ve got you! It can be overwhelming flipping through the Disney Plus library, not to mention all of the other streaming services available.

For this weekend, we’ve taken a look at the Disney Plus library to give our readers a quick list of movies to check out and movies we’d avoid, including a few new titles and one absolute classic that’s about to be in season.

Best Disney Plus movies to watch this weekend, September 22-24

Elemental

WATCH! The newest exciting addition to the Disney Plus library is, of course, Elemental. The 2023 Disney-Pixar flick captured hearts all over the globe when it premiered in theaters earlier this year, following the elements of nature with human characteristics, specifically when a fire and a water fall in love. The animation in this movie is seriously impressive, making it a film that both children and adults can enjoy and appreciate. There are some children’s movies that transcend the genre, and this is the latest example. If you haven’t watched Elemental, we highly recommend it for this weekend!

The Nightmare Before Christmas

WATCH! As summer comes to an end and the fall season officially begins on Saturday, Sept. 23, what better way to get into the Halloween spirit than to watch one of the all-time greatest? Of course, we’re talking about The Nightmare Before Christmas! The 1993 stop-motion movie only gets better with age, telling the tale of a skeleton king who wants to see more of the world beyond his home in Halloween Town. The story is fantastic and the songs are even better in this movie, which was produced by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick.

If your kids haven’t seen The Nightmare Before Christmas yet, this weekend might be the time to introduce them!

Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

SKIP! While we thoroughly enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 here at Bam Smack Pow, we’d really only recommend the documentary covering the making of the movie if you’re big into filmmaking. While the doc, which comes in a little under an hour, is an easy watch, you might find it a bit tedious if you’re not obsessed with the third movie or interested in the behind-the-scenes magic that went into it.

Instead, we’d recommend watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 this weekend, which is also available on Disney Plus.

The Little Mermaid

WATCH! The Little Mermaid was added to the Disney Plus library in early September, and needless to say, it was a big hit for the platform, reigning as the most-watched movie until Elemental was released. The 2023 live-action adaptation of the beloved Disney classic was highly anticipated, with fans flocking to the movie theater to watch it this spring. If you by chance missed the movie in theaters, now’s the perfect chance to check it out!

Apart from the storyline we all know and love, the new adaptation features a stellar cast. Halle Bailey does a fantastic job bringing Ariel to life, with supporting cast members like Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, and Javier Bardem playing some of our favorite characters.

Avatar: The Way of Water

SKIP! Okay, let me just say I really like and appreciate Avatar: The Way of Water. I saw it in theaters last winter and thought it was a worthy follow-up to the original. The visuals are out of this world; it’s truly such an experience. That being said, if you haven’t watched James Cameron’s sequel yet, do you really even want to watch it at all? It’s been out for a while now.

Plus, the movie was made to be watched in theaters. I don’t think watching it at Disney Plus at home would do it justice at all. I haven’t watched it on streaming and I probably never will, to be honest. It’s a fantastic movie, but the draw in seeing it is how amazing it looks on a huge screen.
