4. The Bourne Legacy

Notoriously known as the Bourne movie without Jason Bourne and Matt Damon, The Bourne Legacy arrived in theaters five years after the premiere of The Bourne Ultimatum. This time, the story follows Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), an agent of a separate branch of the CIA from Jason Bourne. Cross is targeted by the CIA in order to prevent the secrecy of its inner workings and programs from becoming public.

Overall, The Bourne Legacy is not a bad movie. It didn’t perform well at the box office or get great reviews, but it’s still a solid action movie. The bar is pretty low for big-budget action movies of the 2010s, but The Bourne Legacy clears that hurdle. It expanded the world of Jason Bourne, but did it add anything to the conversation? I think that’s the question that someone in the room should have asked.

It’s funny because I think The Bourne Legacy has one of the best casts of all five of the Bourne movies. It’s just a bummer that Matt Damon wasn’t involved. I’m not saying Damon could have rescued this film, but part of the allure of a big action franchise like this is that continuity between films. The Bourne Legacy didn’t nail that aspect, among other problems with the story.

  • Release Year: 2012

Let’s keep it moving to the third-best of the Bourne movies, The Bourne Supremacy.
