All 10 Saw movies ranked from worst to best
9. Saw V
Now that Jigsaw and Amanda are both dead, the series needs a new villain, which turns out to be Detective Mark Hoffman in Saw V. The fifth installment in the franchise came out in 2008 and was directed by David Hackl in his directorial debut, from a script penned by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan.
As always, the movie features a group of victims who find themselves caught in a series of traps that test their morals and survival instincts. There’s not a whole lot new here. While we watch the characters try and make it out alive, we also get some background on Hoffman and Jigsaw’s relationship. Like I say about another entry on this list, if you’ve been following along with the Saw movies since the beginning, you might as well watch Saw V and continue. But this middle part of the series is pretty forgettable and, honestly, bad.
But we don’t watch the Saw movies expecting something award-winning, right? We’re here for the gross traps and cheap thrills. In that regard, Saw V does what it’s supposed to do. There are a few creative and disturbing traps, like the pendulum trap, and then there are other scenes that are downright boring. The storyline just isn’t quite there.
Not entirely surprisingly, though, an audience still showed up for Saw V. The fifth installment made nearly $114 million at the box office on a reported $10.8 million budget.
