8. Saw VI

For better or for worse, the Saw franchise continued in 2009 with the sixth movie in the series, Saw VI. The fifth and the sixth in the series are nearly the same to me in terms of quality, but I kind of I prefer the sixth. This one was directed by Kevin Greutert from a script by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. The franchise is already feeling very formulaic and unoriginal by now, but the creativity in the traps and no-backing-down violence this far into the series is pretty impressive.

Like Saw IV, Saw VI takes place after both Jigsaw and Amanda are dead, continuing to follow the FBI’s quest to identify Jigsaw’s successor. Throughout the movie, we explore the backstory of William Easton and his interactions with Jigsaw, while the traps of the current game reveal deeper connections between the characters.

Viewers who stuck it out this long in the series will remember a handful of traps from Saw VI, including the gruesome pound of flesh trap opening scene, in which characters Simone and Eddie must remove flesh from their bodies in order to survive. It’s been reported that the scene had to be cut down some in order for the movie to receive an R-rating instead of NC-17.

Saw VI continues to push the boundaries, but when you’ve seen multiple of these movies already, it doesn’t really hit the same. And it looks like moviegoers finally started feeling the Saw fatigue a bit, making the sixth movie one of the lowest-grossing at the box office. That said, Saw VI was still a financial success considering its low budget. The movie made about $68 million but cost a reported $11 million.
